Autonomous Driving with PID Control
Autonomous Driving with PID Control is a project by Akash Renuka Ashok (Engineer (University Project)). A control-system project in which a simulated vehicle followed cones, maintained a lane, performed lane changes and navigated increasingly complex roads.
- Role
- Engineer (University Project)
- Category
- Robotics & Control
- Stack
- Python, PID control, Vehicle dynamics, Simulation, Foxglove Studio
The problem
Autonomous driving requires stable, responsive control across varying road curvature, sensor noise and latency conditions.
What Akash owned
Implemented and tuned the control system and evaluated it against alternative approaches.
Highlights
- Implemented and tuned PID steering and speed control for stability and responsiveness
- Worked with vehicle-model parameters, road curvature and reward-function design
- Addressed simulation noise, sensor latency and sim-to-real considerations
- Achieved successful road navigation at an average speed of ~95.3 km/h within an 80-120 km/h target range
- Compared alternative control and learning approaches including MPC, PPO and SAC
Outcome
Delivered a working autonomous control system with a clear-eyed account of remaining overspeed, lane-deviation and sideslip issues.
